The court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Kalka, Amit Sehrawat, on Friday sentenced a farmer for two-years' rigorous imprisonment for cutting down 149 eucalyptus trees.
As per the prosecution, Bana Ram, 60, a resident of Nandpur village in Pinjore was held responsible for cutting trees in the nearby Kedarpur village in 2011. A complaint in this regard was made by the then block development panchayat officer, Pinjore. The police arrested Bana Ram, who as per the prosecution accepted the allegations made against him. He even disclosed the place where he had kept the logs after cutting them. However, he was later released on bail.
During the trial, Bana Ram defended himself by saying that the trees were not on the government land. But later after the trial, he was found guilty under Section 411 (dishonestly receiving/retaining stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
He also pleaded that since he was a senior citizen, he should be given some leniency, while announcing the quantum of punishment.
“He was sentenced to two-years' rigorous imprisonment with Rs 3,000 fine on Friday,” public prosecutor Kapil Gaud informed.
