The convict used to beat and harass his wife as a result of which she had started living with her parents in Thandewala in Muktsar district.

Mewa Singh had moved an application in a court in Bathinda in this regard and the victim, along with her sister-in-law Sukhwinder Kaur and her son Gurwinder Singh, had come to the court to attend the case hearing.

When all three came out of court complex, the convict came to them and demanded his wife be handed over to him, which the family denied. Angry at this, Mewa Singh opened fire, leaving all three injured.

Malkit Kaur, who had received a bullet shot to her back, succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital. A case regarding murder and attempt to murder under sections 302 and 307 of the IPC was registered on a complaint by Sukhwinder Kaur.
