A man was, on Thursday, sentenced to life term for burning his wife alive.

25-year-old Sunita of Bassi Blo village had died of burns at a hospital on September 4, 2011. In her dying declaration, she had stated that on the night of August 30, her husband Mukesh Kumar and brother-in-law Chaman Lal had sprinkled kerosene on her and set her ablaze when she was preparing meals.

They had taken her to the hospital on the condition that she would term it an accident, she had said. Hariana police had registered a murder case against the two brothers but, in the absence of concrete evidence, the court acquitted Chaman Lal of the charges and convicted Mukesh.

Mukesh was also fined Rs 50,000 and, in default of payment of fine, the sentence would be extended for another year.
