With an intention to take his own life, a man, Gurcharan Singh, 53, entered the compound of the police headquarter around 11am and gulped a bottle of phenyl. The incident brought to fore the fact that the security arrangements at the police headquarter were not foolproof.

A traffic cop, constable Parvesh Kumar, snatched the bottle from Gurcharan and sounded the Division 5 police.

Soon Division 5 SHO inspector Dharampal reached the spot and rushed Gurcharan to DMC Hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable, but he is still not in a condition to get his statement recorded. Gurcharan's mother Gurmel Kaur (85) and maternal uncle Harbhajan Singh told the police that Gurcharan was upset.

A resident of Ucchi Gali of Gujjarmal Road, Gurcharan is unmarried and works in a garment shop of his maternal uncle in Akalgarh market.

Constable Parvesh said Gurcharan told him that he wanted to end his life.

Inspector Dharampal said the police have recovered a suicide note from his possession that was addressed to Rahul Tewari (commissioner, municipal corporation), but Gurcharan had addressed Tewari as the deputy commissioner. In the suicide note he said that three chemists whose shops were raided by the police in the recent past, have been accusing him of giving information to the police. He said the shopkeepers have been harassing him.

The police investigation, however, found no truth in Gurcharan's claims. The SHO said the signatures on the suicide note are that of Som Singh, though his name is Gurcharan.

“His mother, a retired teacher, refuted that her son was receiving threats from anyone. She told to police that Gurcharan was mentally upset. The picture would be clear after recording the statement of Gurcharan Singh,” said the SHO.
