Man held for murders of wife, mother

The Batala police on Monday said a Bhoma village resident had been arrested in connection with the double murder of his wife and mother.

In a press release issued here, Batala SSP Tulsi Ram said that accused Labh Singh of Bhoma under Ghuman police station had lodged a police complaint on April 13 that when he returned home from his fields in the morning hours, he found his mother Baljeet Kaur and wife Manjeet Kaur lying dead in two rooms.

Police registered a case against unidentified persons and started investigation, during which was found that both victims had been given sleeping pills before their murder. Labh Singh was detained on suspicion and he allegedly confessed to his crime during quesioning.

He claimed that he suspected his wife's character and thus hatched a plan to kill her. On April 12 night, he gave sleeping pills to both his mother and wife and strangulated the latter in his room. However, Labh Singh said that his mother woke up and saw him strangulating Manjeet.

The accused said that his mother tried to rescue Manjeet by raising an alarm but Labh Singh overpowered her and strangulated her also to death.

In order to hookwink the police, he broke the almirah lock and scattered goods and valuables around the house to make it look like a burglary-cum-murder case. Later, he scaled the wall of his house and went off to his fields. After spending the night there, he returned home the next morning and raised an alarm regarding the murder of his mother and wife.
