A husband was arrested for allegedly strangling his wife at Bahadurwala village near sahnewal over a minor dispute on Tuesday.

The victim identified as Harpreet Kaur, 24, had married Surjit Singh, 27, eight months ago and had often complained to her parents that her husband was harassing her.

In his complaint, victim’s father Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Sahnewal, told the police that his daughter was being harassed by her husband over minor disputes. The father also alleged that Surjit used to beat up his daughter claiming that she had an illicit relationship.

The couple had shifted to Bahadurwala village from Moga six months ago, and was staying in a rented accommodation.

The complainant also alleged that his daughter told him recently that Surjit was threatening to kill her. He stated that when he visited the house of her daughter, she was lying dead after which he came to the police.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Lakhvir Singh Tiwani and other police officials reached the spot and started investigation into the matter.

A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Surjit at the Sahnewal police station.

The accused, however, surrendered before the police.
