Special operation cell (SOC) of counter-intelligence, Punjab, on Friday claimed to have arrested a drug smuggler for possessing 5 kg heroin, arms and ammunition.
Accused Sukhbir Singh Sukha of Bhusse village in Tarn Taran district was arrested with heroin, allegedly smuggled from Pakistan, a .30 bore pistol and five live cartridges.
A special police party led by inspector Harwinder Pal Singh and inspector Balbir Singh arrested the accused from the area near Ryan International School on the Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road bypass, where he was waiting on a motorcycle to deliver the contraband to somebody.
A case under Section 85 of NDPS Act and 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered at state special operation cell police station in this regard.
SSOC officials said that the contraband had been smuggled from Pakistan. Investigations were on to unearth Sukha's network. The SSOC officials added that more arrests were likely soon.
The officials said that Sukha had earlier been arrested on January 14, 2011, with 14 packets of heroin and one pistol, but he managed to escape from the Amritsar central jail.
