Man held with illicit liquor worth Rs 18 lakh

The anti narcotics and anti illicit liquor smuggling wing arrested a man after recovering 525 cartons of illicit liquor from his possession on Saturday. According to police the recovered illicit liquor costs Rs 18 lakh.

The police said, the accused, identified as Harpal Singh alias Ladi (27) of Chak Maidas village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), had loaded the liquor in a mini-truck, which was impounded by the police.

A case has been registered against the accused under section 61, 1, 14 of the Excise Act at Focal Point police station.

Sub-inspector Harpal Singh, incharge at anti narcotics and anti illicit liquor smuggling wing, said the police had set up a check point at T-point Moti Nagar following a tip-off. The accused was crossing through the area. The police stopped him and recovered liquor.

The accused told to the police that a man named Raj Kumar had handed over the liquor to him at Jalandhar Bypass and asked him to meet at Sirhind Canal Bridge. The accused said he does not know about the address or phone number of the accused.
