Man held with smack worth Rs 15 lakh

Police here on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man and seized 40gm smack and 1,500 sedatives from his possession. The smack recovered from the accused reportedly costs Rs 15 lakh in the international market.

Police here on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man and seized 40gm smack and 1,500 sedatives from his possession. The smack recovered from the accused reportedly costs Rs 15 lakh in the international market.

The accused, Kulwant Singh, 24, of Sahnewal, was passing by the Sahnewal-Dehon road where police had set up a checkpoint. He tried to escape the spot in his car after spotting the checkpoint, but a chase ensued and the police nabbed him. The police also confiscated the car.

Sub-inspector Harbans Singh, incharge of the wing, said the accused was a landlord and possessed acres of agricultural land. He himself was a drug addict and started drug peddling to make easy money to buy drugs. He added that the accused possessed past criminal record, and four cases were registered against him at different police stations of the city.

A case under section 22, 61, 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused at Dehlon police station.

Singh said the police were investigating to know the name of the accused, who supplied drugs to Kulwant.
