A mysterious fall off the Elevated Road killed a man here on Thursday. The victim, Harsh Kumar, 28, was from Quilla Bhangian area.
Police are unclear about the actual cause of death. Assistant sub-inspector Amarjit Singh, in charge of the bus stand police post, who is investigating the case, confirmed that police had found no suicide note on the victim, and his death could even be an accident. "The man who has died was on foot. A head injury caused by the fall killed him," said the ASI, adding: "He broke his arms and legs as well."
"Apparently, the head hit one of the flyover's pillars, splitting the skull and causing instant death," said the police officer. The autopsy is over and the matter is registered under Section 174 (police to inquire on suicide, murder etc.) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
The road that rests on 17.2-metre-wide single pier is the third of its kind in India and was built for `210 crore for the convenience of tourists and devotees visiting the city's important landmarks such as Durgiana Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah border. Of late, it has become synonymous with accidents, and is tricky to traverse at times when it rains, because of water accumulation on the slope.
The accidents are attributed speed as well as design, as the structure includes a recharging well for rainwater harvesting, in the middle of the incline. The vehicles bound for Jalandhar come speeding over it and find the obstruction hard to negotiate especially during rain, and when they have to brake suddenly to go over the puddle that forms on the incline.
Efforts were being on to educate drivers against speeding, said municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda.
