Irked with their friend for not returning the Rs120 that he owed them, three men allegedly stabbed the 24-year-old at Khazur Chowk of Salem Tabri area in public on late Sunday night.

The police claim to have solved the case within hours of the incident with the arrest of the three accused, who have been identified as Sonu, Shakti and Lovely, all residents of Karnal of Haryana.

The victim, Harvinder Singh alias Ghati of New Janakpuri, was a three-wheeler driver.

Giving details of the case, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) city-1 Amrik Singh Powar said the accused, who worked in a factory, were friends with Harvinder, and they all used to take drugs together.

"The accused told the police that they had loaned `120 to Harvinder to buy drugs for them. However, Harvinder neither got the drugs nor returned their money and started making excuses," the ADCP claimed.

"Annoyed with this, they decided to teach him a lesson. They then met Harvinder at a dhaba in the area and entered in a scuffle with him. But the dhaba owner intervened and dispersed the accused. However, still holding a grudge, the accused, who were in an inebriated condition, intercepted Harvinder near Khazur Chowk two hours later, and stabbed him," Powar added.

Meanwhile, Harvinder's family reached the spot and rushed him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The ADCP said the Salem Tabri police arrested the accused following a tip-off immediately after the incident.

Murder in full public view, but no eyewitness

The police faced trouble in investigation, as though the murder took place in public, not one person came forward as an eyewitness. All efforts of questioning passers-by, shopkeepers and locals went in vain. Earlier, on February 17, three motorcycle-borne men had allegedly gunned down 25-year-old Satvinder Singh Jugnu in full public view in Azad Nagar Market, and even then no one had come forward to help police.
