The city police have booked a person who posed as a CBI inspector and duped people of Rs 44 lakh on the pretext of providing them jobs in Chandigarh police.
The police said the case was registered after a probe against the accused, identified as Sukhdev Masih.
The accused allegedly posed as a CBI inspector posted in Chandigarh and took money to the tune of Rs 44.40 lakh from people by promising them a job.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Anil Kumar, the investigating officer in the case, said, “Sukhdev Masih impersonated as a CBI inspector to dupe people. The accused has allegedly taken money from Major Singh, Jaswant Singh, Sharanjit Kaur, Sarwan Singh, Jarnail Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Ajay Singh and Gurmel Singh on the basis of the complaints filed against him.”
The total amount of money was about Rs 44 lakh, the police said. Some persons duped belong to Amritsar while others are from outside the district.
“We are making efforts to nab the accused and investigate the matter,” the investigating officer added.
A case has been registered under section 420.467,468,471, 120-B of the IPC at the Chheharta police station.
