A 45-year-old man was seriously injured after a truck carrying illegal sand overturned on him, entrapping his leg, on the Noorwala Road on Saturday night.
It took more than two hours to rescue Rajinder Kumar, a registered medical practitioner, as he remained writhing in pain.
Kumar was standing outside his clinic on Noorwala Road. Meanwhile, a truck loaded with illegal sand that was crossing through the area suddenly overturned as the road under it caved in due to heavy load.
Though Kumar tried to get aside, the truck fell on his leg. The passers-by sounded the police and ambulance, following which additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) City 4 Swapan Sharma, along with some police force, reached the spot and initiated the rescue operation. The teams removed sand with the help of JCB machines and cut the truck open with a cutter to rescue Kumar.
The injured medical practitioner was then rushed to Christian Medical College and Hospital. According to doctors, the leg was crushed severely and they were trying their best to save the limb.
The truck driver managed to flee the spot after the incident.
The Basti Jodhewal police have registered a case against the driver for reckless driving, causing hurt, illegal mining of sand and for stealing sand.
Inspector Sukhdev Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Basti Jodhewal police station, said a case was registered against the truck driver and efforts were on to arrest him.
