The court of additional session judge JS Bhinder on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonmentin a double murder case.

Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Miani village in Tanda, had been booked in June 2012 for murdering his mother-in-law and brother-in-law over marital dispute. A case was registered against him on the statement of his wife Navdeep Kaur who alleged that her Germany returned husband wanted a divorce but neither she nor her parents agreed to the same.

She said that on June 22, Bhupinder called her mother Surinder Kaur and brother Lovepreet Singh to their house to discuss the matter but when the duo was leaving, he took out his .32 bore revolver and opened fire at them.

Both were declared brought dead in Tanda civil hospital.

After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot but later surrendered before the police. His, mother, brother and sister-in-law, whom Navdeep had accused of domestic violence, managed to flee the country the same night. The police had framed charges against one Mandip Singh for harbouring the offender but he was acquitted by the court for lack of sufficient evidence.

Bhupinder was sentenced for the whole life under Section 302 of IPC and five years under the Arms Act. Both the sentences would run concurrently.
