punjab Updated: Jun 18, 2014 20:25 IST

At a wedding in Sunam, the groom's 26-year-old cousin was seriously injured when the groom's brother-in-law fired a bullet for not allowing him and his wife to attend the ceremony.

Jagdeep Singh and his wife Jaspreet Kaur had come to attend Jaspreet's brother's wedding. But, when they were not allowed inside, Jagdeep fired a bullet, injuring Narendar Singh, Jaspreet's cousin, on the shoulder. He was admitted at the Rajindera Hospital in Patiala.

Jagdeep, who was beaten up by the guests at the wedding, was admitted at the government hospital here.

According to the police, Jaspreet had married Jagdeep against her family's wishes, last year, following which the family had forbidden her from her entering their home in Sunam.

On Tuesday, when the couple came to attend the wedding, Jaspreet's family members objected which led Jagdeep to shoot.

The Sunam police confirmed that a case had been registered against the couple under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. The police will arrest Jagdeep once he is discharged.
