A man was shot dead over the dispute of a trench in Argowal village on Friday. Surjit Singh, who was in his forties, was sprayed with bullets by a fellow villager Sahib Singh around 7.30 am when the two confronted each other in the village lane.

Surjit received two shots, one in his groins and other in the arm while three shots were missed. The assailant allegedly fled from the spot along with his wife Joginder Kaur on a motorcycle after the incident. Surjit was rushed to Hoshiarpur civil hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Garhdiwala station house officer Parminder Singh said the dispute between the two was settled a year ago but the bitterness remained. What instigated the attack was not known, he added.

He revealed that a case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC had been registered against Sahib, his wife, son Jora Singh and another woman Ranjit Kaur. The latter two had been arrested, said the SHO.
