In yet another shameful incident related to eve-teasing,a group of inebriated miscreants stabbed a man as he tried to protect his wife from their unwelcome advances at Pahari Gate on Wednesday night.
Police have since booked four youths in the case and were trying to arrest them.
Police said Rakesh Kumar of Guru Nanak Colony along with his wife and three-year-old son had gone to the food mart at Pahari gate for refreshments. While they were waiting for their food, a group of 4-5 youths arrived at the spot and started misbehaving with Rakesh's wife.
Feeling unsecure, the couple moved a few metres away but the youths followed them and again teased Rakesh's wife. When he protested, the youths beat him up. One of the accused, identified as Shakti, picked up a knife from the food stall and allegedly stabbed Rakesh.
As shopkeepers rushed to rescue the harried couple and their son, the youths fled the spot.
The injured was rushed to the civil hospital for treatment.
Police registered a case under Section 324, 354, 506 and 34 of the IPC against Shakti and three unidentified persons on the complaint of Rakesh.
Eyewitnesses claimed that a police party was present just a few metres away from the spot but the policemen remained mere spectators to the goings-on rather than intervene to save the couple.
When contacted, Batala SSP Tulsi Ram said that police were raiding all possible hideouts of the accused to arrest them.
