Angered by the birth of a third daughter instead of a son, a resident of Bhucchar Kallan village near Chabhal, 25 km from here, allegedly strangulated his 30-year-old wife to death late on Sunday night.

A case has been registered under Section 306 of IPC against accused Nishan Singh for the death of Paramjit Kaur.

Sources said that the couple were married for 10 years and earlier had two daughters. They had a discord over the issue of a male heir.

Kaur's brother Surjit Singh alleged that the accused often beat her up. He charged that Nishan had beaten his sister again and choked her to death.

The accused and his kin were absconding after the incident.

Meanwhile, Shinder Kaur, a sister of the accused, termed the allegation of murder leveled against her brother 'baseless'.

Admitting that her brother desired a male child, Shinder denied that he tortured Paramjit and alleged that she consumed some poisonous substance.

Investigating officer Manjit Singh said that the body had been sent for post mortem. "Further action would be taken on the receipt of the medical report," he said.
