A resident of Pakki Rurki in Mohali on Tuesday wrote to the Punjab director general of police (DGP) to register a case of murder against his son-in-law and his paramour for the murder of his daughter whose body was found in the Tohana canal near Mandi Gobindgarh a few weeks ago. Kuldeep Singh, father of Gurmeet Kaur, the deceased, alleged that earlier the police suspected it to be a case of suicide and refused to register cases against Hardeep Singh, Gurmeet's husband, and his lover Sandeep Kaur.

Hardeep was a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh.

However, the post-mortem report from the Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala confirmed that the deceased died of strangulation, Kuldeep said.
He added that the report also confirmed his daughter was beaten up as her limbs and other parts were broken.

The police had earlier booked Hardeep under Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of the IPC after Kuldeep's murder allegations against him and his lover. Although Hardeep was sent to the Nabha jail, the father alleged that the police had not arrested the paramour due to political pressure.
