Municipal council officiating executive officer Ajay Parashar, who is basically a revenue officer, said, “I don’t want to comment on the civic body past actions while dealing with the serious issue of garbage collection and its scientific mitigation. The MC has now done a lot to clean the town.”

He added the civic body after the orders of the National Green Tribunal Shimla branch has formed ward committees in 10 wards to monitor door-to-door collection of garbage and ensure that no one threw garbage in open and collection of garbage in two wards have been outsourced.

“The MC has invited tenders for proper fencing of dumping site at the Kawari area and constructing room for permanent chowkidar, including construction of platform to set treatment plant at the dumping site,” he said, adding that the civic body was removing containers from the town and tenders have been invited to clean and keep vigil over dumping of garbage in open nulhas in the town.

“We have also involved educational institutions to aware students about biodegradable and non-biodegradable material, its mitigation and recycling,” he said.

He stated the MC has signed a memorandum of understanding with a cement company, which would carry and reuse most of the non-biodegradable waste in their boilers and they would pay the civic body in return for the plastic by its weight.

The NGT’s Shimla branch has asked the Central Pollution Control Board to release `50 lakh immediately to the Mandi MC for the purpose and also asked the latter to ensure that garbage was treated scientifically. The MC has to file a reply to NGT Shimla on May 29.
