The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Amritsar), led by Simranjit Singh Mann, organised a function here on Friday to observe Sikh militant preacher Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s 69th birth anniversary.
Addressing the gathering in a ground opposite Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, Mann said the ruling SAD and the Congress were two sides of the same coin and both were befooling people with false promises. He said the state government and the police had failed to arrest the accused responsible for the killing of two youths in the Bargari firing incident and also the culprits involved in incidents of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib.
Mann appealed to the gathering to throw out the SAD-BJP government in the 2017 assembly elections. He said if his party came to power, landless farmers would be given land and all farmers’ loans would be waived. Some SAD (A) leaders asked the people to boycott the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the wake of AAP leader Kumar Vishwas’ derogatory remark against Bhindranwale.
On the lines of the radicals’ Sarbat Khalsa and the Shaheedi Jor Mela conference, the SAD (A) passed several resolutions, seeking the release of arrested organisers of the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’; formation of the SAD (A) government in 2017; providing quality seeds, pesticides and manure to farmers; curbing drug abuse in Punjab; ensuring justice to victims of the Bargari incident; and fast-tracking investigation into desecration cases. The speakers also reiterated their demand for Khalistan.
The district police made elaborate security arrangements to ensure that the function passed off peacefully. The entire proceedings were videographed.
