While the district administration claims to be creating awareness to curb the drug abuse in the region, illegal sale of liquor and harassment by the henchmen of the wine contractors continues to flourish in Mansa. In the last one year around 1,134 cases have been registered in this regard.

“Smugglers sell liquor in the rival’s region to hamper their business and such contractors have political support so they often get away with this,” said one contractor on the condition of anonymity.

Another contractor alleged that cops go soft on the bootleggers as they have understanding with them.

Illegal check posts are set up by these henchmen of wine contractors, who forcefully stop vehicles suspected of carrying illegal liquor. They assault people going for marriage functions and harass the women passengers. “We go to districts of Haryana to buy cheap liquor. These henchmen of wine contractors harass us. No cop or officials from excise department accompanies them during these raids at the bordering areas of Haryana,” said Jagtar Singh from Mofar village.

Though the district administration has held meetings with the wine contractors to check their henchmen, the assistant excise and taxation commissioner Pritpal Singh denies it and said that excise department is quite vigilant in this regard. “I cannot believe that wine contractors put naakas. My officials are quite vigilant and accompany these wine contractors while putting up such checkposts.”
