A day after HT highlighted how the district administration ignored the state government’s directive to identify the cases of farmer suicides; in yet another similar case, the district administration and the officials of most of the departments were caught unawares when asked about a notification issued by the state government to list the corrupt officers in the district.

As per the records, this year on June 10, the vigilance department on the directions of the state government had sent a notification to all the deputy commissioners and officers of all the departments in the state, asking them to prepare a list of corrupt officers and to make sure that proper action was taken against them.

Two months later on August 31, Faridkot divisional commissioner BK Meena sent a letter to the Mansa deputy commissioner, asking him to prepare the list. Mansa DC Bhupinder Singh Rai took 15 days to instruct the SDMs of the three-sub divisions, including Mansa, Budhlada and Sardulgarh to prepare and submit a list of such officers within 10 days.

However, it was found that despite the letters being issued on September 15, none of the SDMs concerned have prepared any such list and most of the officers even feigned ignorance about the issue.

When contacted, the officers either passed the buck on the vigilance department or claimed absolute ignorance about the whole issue. “I am really sorry, but I have not received any such notification from the deputy commissioner,” said a senior officer, who wished to stay anonymous.

SDM Sardulgarh Poonam Singh when contacted first claimed that she was not aware of any such notification, but later retracted saying that her office has received such instructions and the list would be submitted soon.

On the other hand Mansa SDM Rakesh Kumar shifted the responsibility to prepare a list of officers having dubious records on the vigilance department. “How can we make such a list? It will be like defaming anyone who is a government servant. The vigilance should take a call on this.”

In the recent past, the district administration has seen a few government employees, including an ADTO being booked for forgery and the way the administration has ignored the instructions of the state government clearly shows their seriousness while dealing with corrupt practices.
