Punjabi University has started its first constituent government college for girls in Mansa district where the literacy rate is one of the lowest in the state.
The college was a dream project of Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, which would provide higher education to girls from backward areas. The college building has come up in two years as the foundation stone of the college was laid on June 19, 2011.
Harsimrat said, "Parents of rural girls should send their girls for higher education so that they can compete with others. Relaxation is being given to scheduled caste girls in admissions; besides, scholarships will also be given to students."
Harsimrat thanked the university for making higher education reach the doorsteps of the rural people.
Deputy commissioner Amit Dhaka said, "The college will provide higher education to poor rural girls. Admissions for the current session in BA, B Com professional, B Sc non-medical, BCA and PGDCA are on. Classes for these courses will start from July 15. Interested students can submit the application forms by June 30."
The deputy commissioner said the arts block of the college was complete and the remaining work would be completed soon. "For any admission queries, contact 94174-53854," said Dhaka.
