The price of being wedded lawfully just got up, a lot. The Punjab government has imposed a hefty fee on the compulsory registration of marriage in the state.
In an official communication to all deputy commissioners and revenue officers in the state, the undersecretary of home affairs and justice department has asked them to implement the marriage-registration rules that the government has notified. If you register within three months, court-fee stamps worth `1,500 shall accompany the memorandum.
If you register later, you also pay a late fee of `1,000. After six months, the marriage could be registered only after written permission from the district registrar of marriages, subject to payment of a late fee of `1,500 in addition to the fee specified. Registration after a year will only be with the written permission of the chief registrar of marriages, subject to payment of a late fee of `2,000 and the charges specified.
These are the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules, 2013. Until now, couples paid `140 as government fee and `700 as Suvidha fee for the registration of marriage.
