Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar on Wednesday accused Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Paramjit Singh Sarna of not observing Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom day as per the Nanakshahi calendar.
Talking to mediapersons at Gurdwara Bhatta Sahib here on Wednesday, Makkar said Sarna had challenged the Akal Takht's authority by not following directions of the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs regarding the approved calendar and was following the Pakistan Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in this regard.
Makkar said the Delhi Sikhs were not supporting Sarna as 400 Singh Sabhas of the Capital had observed the martyrdom day on May 25, ignoring 'threats and allurements' given by Sarna. The DSGMC and the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee are observing the martyrdom day on June 16.
Makkar said the SGPC had also contacted the Auqaf Board and the Pakistan minister concerned regarding the decision to observe June 16 as martyrdom day and they had assured to look into the matter.
"The matter would be taken up with the higher authorities of Pakistan during the SGPC jatha's visit to Pakistan for observing Maharaja Ranjit Singh's death anniversary in June," he said.
Earlier, Makkar inaugurated the work of laying interlocking tiles at Gurdwara Bhatta Sahib. He also laid the foundation stone of a 445-room modern serai and Diwan Hall at Anandpur Sahib.
Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Tarlochan Singh, Rupnagar MLA Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, former minister Bibi Satwant Kaur Sandhu, and SGPC members Paramjit Singh Lakhewal and Surinder Singh were present on the occasion.
