Following nationwide protest against UPA government's decision of increasing diesel prices and foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail, the state government has postponed the date of elections for the post of mayor in Jalandhar. The voting will now be held on September 25.
Municipal corporation commissioner Vinay Bublani said the government had postponed the elections due to the nationwide bandh against the Centre on September 20.
Various political parties including Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have called on for a bandh against ruling party in the state. The postponement of 'D-day' has given extension to the BJP's candidate to intensify their political lobbying to grab the plum post.
So far names of Ravi Mahendru, Sunil Jyoti and Bhagwant Prabhakar have emerged as frontrunners for the post of mayor. As the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor would be appointed from SAD, race among the women has intensified as the sitting senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia is in soup, especially after his election was challenged due to his conviction in a case.
The SAD councillors' aspirants have also been lobbying hard. All the aspirants reached a marriage function here on Wednesday after they learned that deputy chief minister and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal would also attend the function.
