Municipal corporation cleared 70 encroachments near Cheema Chowk and Chaura Bazar on Tuesday. Nearly 50 encroachments, mostly comprising carts and assortment of articles, including ones made of wood, were cleared at Cheema Chowk to pave way for diverting traffic while repairs are undertaken on the Dholewal Chowk flyover. The remaining was cleared from Chaura Bazar.
Teams also cleared illegal stalls on footpaths. Superintendent Jasdev Sekhon led the team. It was also learnt that wooden articles were allegedly kept on the sides of the road by the area councilor.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers protested against the municipal corporation anti-encroachment drive. A shopkeeper had allegedly even misbehaved with municipal corporation officials.
While officials allege that shopkeepers have political backing and continue to flout rules despite repeated warnings, the latter state that authorities demand a bribe to allow them to keep articles on the side of roads.
Jagjivan Singh, a commuter, said encroachments cause inconvenience.
