The last day of the financial year brought cheers for the Patiala municipal corporation authorities as they managed to collect around Rs 1.50 crore of property tax on Monday.

With this, the civic body has now collected around Rs 10.70 crore of property tax in the concluded financial year against the expectation of collecting Rs 30 crore.

Ravdeep Singh, in-charge of property tax branch, said that a heavy rush had been witnessed at tax collection booths in the MC office due to the last date of filing of property tax.

The authorities have also set the target to generate Rs 21 crore in 2014-15 financial year besides collecting pending arrears of Rs 3.86 crore pertaining to house tax, which was abolished with the implementation of property tax.

"We will take steps to meet target for the coming year, while massive awareness campaigns will be launched to exhort people to pay their tax", he said.
