Apart from the modern dump at Partap Bagh, construction of an elevated road project at Basti Bawa Khel is another bone of contention between the Jalandhar municipal corporation (MC) and the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT).

The officials at JIT on Monday informed HT that the MC had not communicated them about its decision to construct a four-lane road against the elevated road at Basti Bawa Khel area on Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.

The JIT would now send the status report on the project to the chief engineer of the local bodies department. In the letter, they would also ask for the Punjab government’s decision on the four-lane road in the area against the elevated road project. “And in case the government decides to make it a four-lane road, the JIT will ask if they will be the part of the project or not,” said one of the JIT officials.

It is to be mentioned that the Punjab government had appointed the Jalandhar Improvement Trust as the executive body by for the elevated road at the Basti Bawa Khel area.

The statement has been made at a time when the JIT has been assigned the task of evaluating the proposal and estimate made for the development of municipal council and corporation falling under four districts, including Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur.

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner GS Khaira informed that the MC has sent a proposal of `6.82 crore for the four-lane road at Basti Bawa Khel area.

He said since most of the people were in favour of making the four-lane road in the area and had started demolishing the encroachments for the same, the MC had sent the proposal for the construction of a four-lane road at Basti Bawa Khel.

Meanwhile, an official at JIT said since they have been evaluating the estimate of the proposal made for the development, they also came across the proposal made by the MC for the Basti Bawa Khel project.

JIT had already floated tender and selected a firm for the same but due to paucity of funds, it was not been able to go further with the project. “We have asked the MC about the financial status for initiating the project many a times, but in vain,” said an official at JIT.
