A 54-year-old Class 4 employee with the Jalandhar municipal corporation ended his life by hanging himself from a column beam in the local cremation ground near Chuggiti in the city on Wednesday morning.

The deceased Ram Lubhaya, a resident of Ram Dass Abadi, has left behind a three-page suicide note blaming Vinod Kumar, a tipper driver with the MC. The note also blames MC officials, but these have not been blamed.

The police claimed that initial investigations had shown that Lubhaya had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh with the help of Vinod and an accountant. However, Lubhaya was paying the installments to them instead of directly to the bank. Later, he reportedly discovered that this amount was never deposited in a bank, but had been misappropriated by Vinod and others. When the bank declared him a defaulter and sent him a notice, he reportedly panicked and ended his life.

Investigation officer Kirpal Singh said that a case has been registered under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Vinod and others. No arrests have been made.
