The activism, shown by the local MLA and chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Sarup Chand Singla, to improve the functioning of the municipal corporation of Bathinda (MCB) after parliamentary elections, seems to be creating more trouble for him than fulfilling the objective of providing relief to the people.

With employees of the MCB having expressed strong resentment against Singla’s labelling all the urban body employees as ‘corrupt’, during a raid of the office and allegedly misbehaving with a staff member during a sangat darshan programme on Monday, the employees have announced to boycott sangat darshan programmes of the CPS being held in the MC office.

A general body meeting of the employees union of MCB, on Tuesday evening, decided not to attend any of the sangat darshan programmes of the local member of legislative assembly (MLA) as a mark of protest against the alleged ‘insulting’ words used by him for urban body employees.

General secretary of the union Ranjit Singh said that all the employees have unanimously decided not to attend his sangat darshan programmes in the MCB office because he has insulted the employees by terming them corrupt and misbehaving with them during such programmes on Monday.

“The MC commissioner is the authority to whom we will report and act according to his directions. None of the employees will attend the public meetings by MLA and any direction to us will have to come through the commissioner only,” he said.

It may be recalled that Singla had, during a raid in the MCB office last week, reportedly termed all the employees as corrupt. He had gone angry after finding anomalies in the record of streetlights in the store and ordered a probe into it.

Employees have also alleged that Singla misbehaved with an employee during a sangat darshan programme on Monday for no fault of his. Singla could not be contacted despite repeated attempts
over his mobile phone.

With Bathinda MP and SAD candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal having trailed behind Congress candidate by over 29,000 votes in Bathinda (urban) assembly segment in parliamentary elections, the CPS had swung into action last week and raided the MCB office. He has also decided to listen to public grievances every week in the MC office. The objective behind this is to change the public perception of the urban body, that could help in changing the people’s mindset.
