In a bid to encourage traders to give up practices that result in encroachments, the officials of the municipal corporation (MC) on Wednesday gave flowers to the shopkeepers who have never encroached upon the roads at Ghumar Mandi.
Zonal commissioner PS Ghuman conducted this campaign to honour the shopkeepers who follow the norms at Ghumar Mandi and Jawahar Nagar camp.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Rupinder Kaur Sra, MC police and other staff members participated in the drive to sensitise people against encroachments.
Ghuman said the shopkeepers were urged not to display goods outside their outlets.
According to him, a meeting was conducted with the shopkeepers of Jawahar Nagar Camp and leaders in surrounding areas at the Kochar market police station. A joint operation against encroachments was also conducted in the area.
It is worth mentioning here that heavy rush is being witnessed at the major markets of the city and with several shopkeepers encroaching upon the roads, commuters have been facing inconvenience.
During the campaign, the officials of MC’s tehbazari wing also warned the shopkeepers who keep their articles on roads. If the violators did not remove the encroachments, strict action will be taken, the officials said.
A city resident, Rajinder Singh, said the MC authorities should not spare the encroachers and heavy fine should be imposed apart from getting FIRs lodged against them.
