Normally vocal and cornering the ruling SAD-BJP in General House meetings of the municipal corporation (MC), Congress councillors chose to stay silent throughout the meeting on Friday by putting black bands around their mouth in protest.
As soon as the House meeting commences, four Congress councillors led by Raj Kanwal Pritpal Singh Lucky appeared with black bands around their mouth.
“We chose to remain silent as the SAD-BJP wasn’t open to criticism, and none of the issues raised by the opposition was addressed in the House,” said Lucky.
During the entire meeting, which lasted for over two hours, the Congress councillors did not utter even a word.
SAD wants Amritsar to get set for Smart City
As Amritsar has been selected for Smart City project, Akali councillor Surinder Singh Sultanwind stressed at the meeting that there were many infrastructural woes in the city, and the need of the hour for the MC was to pull up its socks for portraying a better picture of the holy city.
He targeted the MC for failing to ensure a clean city, while stating that it was the time for the MC to improve services and to work on e-governance. “Whatever work is done by the MC must be updated on its website,” he added.
Senior deputy mayor Avtar Singh Truckanwala said, “It’s nice that various development works are continuing in Amritsar, but the need of the hour is we put in place better drainage system so that people don’t face the problem of waterlogging during monsoon.”
Answering issues raised by the councillors, Amritsar mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said, “Efforts are on to streamline things and ensure cleanliness in the city. Amritsar is lucky to be in the Smart City project and the MC will be trying its best to meet the parameters. The city is facing certain issues because of various developmental works going on at present, and once they are complete all will be well.”
Meanwhile, various developmental works got a nod at the meeting.
