One person was killed and three others injured seriously in a firing incident during Ludhiana municipal corporation elections. In another case, Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu was injured after a clash between Congress and SAD -BJP supporters in Model Gram on Sunday morning.

A scuffle ensued between supporters of SAD candidate Baljinder Singh Gogi and an Independent, after which one of Gogi's supporters allegedly opened fire at around 1pm in ward number 1. The deceased was identified as Banti Bajwa, ex-sarpanch of Bahadurke village near Ludhiana. He was supporting an Independent candidate.

Bajwa was declared brought dead at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) while other three injured were under treatment.

Ashu along with his supporters was taking a round in ward number 49 where his wife Mamta is contesting as a Congress candidate when the incident occured. Trouble had started brewing at 7.30am when Ashu's supporters were gathering voters (majority of whom were migrant labourers) living in 'vehras' located in ward number 49.

Supporters of BJP candidate Iqbaljit Singh entered into a confrontation with the Congress workers and accused them of hiring people to cast "bogus votes".

After a woman supporter of Mamta went to cast vote but was not allowed, she called up Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who immediately reached the spot with his supporters.

The supporters of both parties clashed and Ashu received injuries and a dislocated shoulder in the incident.

Soon after the incident, additional police squads were deployed in the area and the situation was brought under control.

When contacted, MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu denied any report of clash. "There was no brawl and I just fell down while taking a round in the ward and injured my shoulder."

On the other hand, Iqbaljit Singh alleged Ashu had made fake votes in the name of migrants. "The voters shown in the voter lists are shown to be inhabitants of houses that do not exist in ward number 49. There are 963 fake votes in this ward. He has carried on with the practice of bogus voting ever since his tenures as MC councilor. We had objected against fake votes and had asked the presiding officer to double check the voters."

It is also learnt that the migrants were not allowed to vote after the incident.

Deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer, Rahul Tewari when asked about the bogus votes and rejection of voters whose names were in the voter list said, "The presiding officers do not have power to reject voters who have their names in the list but they are checking the identity of each voter before allowing him to vote. In case of doubt of fake/bogus vote, they can take the decision on individual basis."
