The local municipal corporation (MC) razed 10 illegal under construction shops in Gandhi Nagar here on Monday.

The shops were being reconstructed as the MC had earlier demolished the under construction shops at same place in June this year.

According to the MC officials, the shops were reconstructed against the building bylaws and that too without the permission of the civic body. The shops were being illegally constructed under the high-tension wires, the officials said.

Sources said some residents were supporting the illegal construction but the MC team was successful in removing these structures. The illegal construction was being done with support of local political leaders, sources alleged.

Nirmaljeet Verma, MC building inspector, said: “The action was taken following a complaint and the drive was conducted successfully.”

Verma said the police had sealed the area so that the MC team could conduct the drive. Assistant town planner (ATP), Kamaljeet Kaur, was not available for comment.
