The tehbazari wing of the Ludhiana municipal corporation on Sunday removed the sabzi mandi set up near Baba Isher Singh Public School, BRS Nagar.

The MC carried the drive in the morning. The sabzi mandi led to huge traffic snarls every Sunday, especially in the evening as a result of which commuters suffered a lot.
"The mandi was set up in 1987 and we charged rs 10 from each vendor for installing a stall," Punjab Mandi Board inspector Teg Bahadur said.

He said there were over 150 private mandis in the city and the municipal corporation had taken no action against them.

Residents living in the nearby areas also complained of disturbance.

Jasjeet Singh, a resident of BRS Nagar, said, "Every Sunday, there was chaos all around the bridge due to this mandi. Vendors would cover half the road."

Municipal corporation superintendent (zone D) Rajeev Bhardwaj said, "The land where this mandi was set up belongs to the civic body. The MC never allowed anyone to set up the mandi here."
