Municipal Corporation (MC) sealed a shop after its owner failed to pay the house tax in Dhobi Ghat area, Hambran road, here on Wednesday.

A team of Tehbazari wing recovered Rs 3.60 lakh from different shops and a hosiery factory in Dhobi Ghat area.

According to officials, the owners of these shops and hosiery firm failed to pay the house tax despite warnings issued by the department.

When the MC team, along with police, reached to seal these buildings, the owners of four shops and hosiery firm were ready to pay the house tax, while one shop, which was locked, has been sealed.

However, the hosiery owner gave a cheque of Rs 3.48 lakh to the officials only after arguing with them, to avoid sealing of the hosiery firm.

According to sources, some people also tried to put political pressure on the MC team, but the officials returned only after collecting the tax.

Jasdev Singh Sekhon, superintendent at MC Zone-D office, said, “We conducted this drive to collect pending house tax in Dhobi Ghat area. We have sealed one shop as the owner has not submitted house tax, while the owners of other shops and hosiery firm paid the tax to avoid action.”

Encroachments removed

A team of MC removed around 35 encroachments, including slums and small stalls in Sector 32 on the Chandigarh road and Tajpur road.

Rajeev Bhardwaj, superintendent at Zone-A office, said they had warned the makeshift owners to remove encroachments from the roadside near the Ludhiana railway station.
