Punjab industries and commerce minister Madan Mohan Mittal and Doaba zone president of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) Sarabjot Singh Sabi have met eight Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillors, who had resigned in protest against their party member and senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia, who had used derogatory language against mayor Sunil Jyoti.
Sabi, who arrived in the city in the morning, first met the councillors, including deputy mayor Arvinder Kaur Oberoi and her husband Kuldeep Oberoi, and then met Bhatia.
Mittal met the 16 BJP councillors, who have also resigned in protest against Bhatia, on Thursday night. Mittal said that he would now give the report to BJP state chief Vijay Sampla, who will hold talks with the SAD party high command.
Meanwhile, Bhatia expressed resentment over Mittal’s remark against him.
During a meeting with BJP councilors, Mittal reportedly said, “Bhatia nu natth paani chahidi hai (he needs to be tamed)”.
BJP chief Vijay Sampla had appointed Mittal to hold talks with BJP councilors
“He (Mittal) is very senior to me and I respect him a lot, but the kind of ‘unparliamentary’ language that he has used against me has hurt my sentiments,” said Bhatia.
Sabi said he had taken the opinion of SAD councillors and was hopeful party members would again unite and work for the development of the city along with partner Bharatiya Janata Party.
Councillors unhappy with heads
The meetings of SAD and BJP councillors with the leaders deputed by the party high command were not limited to expressing their problem with the senior deputy mayor, but they also used the opportunity to express resentment against their party heads in the corporation.
Sources said councillors have also complained against their party heads, BJP’s mayor Sunil Jyoti and senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia of the SAD. They said they were paying no heed to various demands made by them and were also not giving them the respect they deserve.
At the SAD councillors’ meeting, all the councilors strongly raised their voice against Bhatia and demanded the removal of Kamaljit Singh Bhatia from the post of senior deputy mayor.
