The Chandigarh municipal corporation on Friday directed its enforcement staff to carry out surprise checks in two separate shifts to eliminate illegal encroachment from the city markets. The shifts would be carried out between 1 pm to 9 pm and 5 pm to 1am. Flying squads have also been formed by the civic body to make sure the checks are carried out with utmost efficiency.
Sub divisional magistrate (SDM) (Central), Prince Dhawan said, “We have decided to take strict action against the encroachers who surface in the city markets after 7 pm. Vendors know that the enforcement staff carries out checks only till evening and we will change that.”
He added that a detailed draft had been prepared and municipal commissioner B Purushartha issued the orders.
As per official orders, standing duties for the enforcement staff in sectors 17, 19 and 22 will be performed as and when required.
Superintendent (enforcement), Kashmir Singh, and inspector (enforcement), Sunil Dutt, will be the controlling officers in case an anti-encroachment drive is carried out by the enforcement wing of the MC in any part of the city.
The officers will specifically check encroachers selling clothes, garments, artificial jewellery and other articles from market corridors in sector 15, 17, 19, 20, 22, 35, 37 and other markets.
