The city is likely to be besieged by garbage heaps as the sanitation workers of the Amritsar municipal corporation and the members of the MC Workers' Union have decided to shun lifting of garbage from Tuesday in the absence of a landfill site in the city and in view of the threats faced by them amid growing public resentment over garbage dumps in Bhagtanwala and other sites.

Surinder Tona, general secretary, MC Workers Union, said that the sanitation workers and garbage lifters were doing their duty daily, but had to face threats from the public in Bhagtanwala, Chobhal and other areas because of dumping of garbage at the already overflowing garbage dumps there.

"We intend to suspend the lifting of garbage till the MC arranges a dumping ground for the same," he said. However, municipal commissioner Pradeep Sabharwal said that the lifting of garbage would not be suspended at any cost.

"We have identified a chunk of land on Chobhal road and are in the process of acquiring it for a dumping ground," he said.
