A mentally-challenged minor girl was allegedly raped by a youth living in her neighbourhood in the Gawal Mandi area in the city on Monday night.
The Amritsar city police have booked the youth, identified as Money (25), under sections 376, 506 and 511 of IPC on charges of raping the 17-year-girl residing in his locality.
The case has been registered on the complaint of Mangat Ram, father of the victim, at Cantonment police station.
This is the ninth rape incident involving a minor girl reported in the city this year.
The incident took place when the girl was sleeping on a cot outside her house in the lane in which her house is situated, following a power cut in the area. The victim, who is mentally-challenged, is the eldest in the family comprising four children.
ASI Talwinder Singh Cantonment Police Station said that the girl's father was sleeping on a cot near her and woke up after she made some noise and found the accused raping her.
He added that being next-door neighbours, the families of the accused and the victim had enjoyed good rapport.
The ASI said a case has been registered but the accused is yet to be arrested. "Efforts are being made to arrest the accused, who is still absconding," he said.
Earlier this month, a minor boy had been booked on charges of raping his 13-year-old next-door neighbour after taking her to a secluded place when her father was away to work. He had told the girl that her father has been caught by someone in the jungle and might be killed if she does not reach out to help him. He raped her when she accompanied him to the place.
Prior to that, three minor girls in the city had been allegedly raped by the people they trusted. The accused included the foster father of a victim and two 'gatka' teachers of two young girls.
