Mid-day meal cooks held a protest outside minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur's Moti Mahal residence here on Saturday demanding a hike in their salaries.

Democratic Mid- Day Meal Cooks' Front (DMDMCF) Patiala chapter president Sukhjit Kaur said mid-day meal cooks in Punjab are being paid Rs 750 by the Centre and Rs 450 by the state government every month, which is below minimum wages. However, their peers in Haryana are being paid Rs 2500 per month, she added.

The agitators, raising anti-government slogans, demanded that their salaries be hiked.

They alleged that though the central government had given them assurances in the past on salary hike but it had failed so far to do so.

The union members also demanded that district-level training should be organized for female cooks and they should get direct payment of their salaries into their accounts.

The union members called off their protest when they were given an assurance by SDM Gurpal Chahal that a meeting would be organised between the minister of state for external affairs and DMDMCF delegates on Sunday.
