To provide better services to migrant Punjabis, a special identification NRI card would be issued to them. The card can be applied for through the website of the department concerned.

NRI affairs minister Bikram Singh Majithia has said that card would offer facilities like medical aid, shopping and reserved discounts.

"The initiative of the Punjab government would go a long way in inculcating a sense of confidence among the migrant Punjabis," he said.

He added that the tourism department had been directed to explore the possibilities of student-exchange so as to orchestrate month-long tours to connect the migrant Indian students with the rich cultural heritage of Punjab, under the 'Know Your Motherland' initiative.

Appreciating the role played by the migrant Punjabis in the development of the state, Majithia said that the Punjab government has directed its officials to deal with the affairs of the NRIs and ensure that the NRIs are not subjected to any kind of harassment.
