The mining department swooped on a sand mining mafia on Sunday and seized truckloads of illegally extracted sand from the bed of the Beas. The man behind the illegitimate operation is said to be highly connected. A case has been registered against him but he is at large.

On a tip-off, Dasuya sub-divisional magistrate Barjinder Singh ordered a raid at the given site. When the raiding team reached the riverbed near Mewa Miani village, illegal quarrying was going on and some persons were busy scooping sand and loading it on to tractor trolleys.

Leaving the illegally mined sand there, the men escaped into a nearby jungle. A small crane, drums, three tractor trolleys, a floating platform made of drums and wood and other excavating machinery was recovered from the site.

Locals said the illegal trade was being carried out by one Paramjit Singh alias Bhula of Ahiyapur village. On the statement of block mining officer Onkar Singh, the Dasuya police registered a case against him but till late on Monday, he had not been arrested.

District mining officer Balwinder Singh said a lot of planning and care had gone into the raiding operation as the accused were armed and had a huge network.
