A minor boy committed suicide by hanging under mysterious circumstances on Saturday, said police.

The victim, said police, has been identified as 17-year-old Harjit Singh, alias, Honey, a resident of Sultanwind village.

Divulging details, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (south) Balkrishan Singla said Harjit committed suicide by hanging in the plots near his house. “The corpse of Harjit Singh was found hanging from a tree almost 50 meters away from his house,” he said. He added that the victimhailed from a family of labourers.

The Amritsar city police have started probing the case under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 (CrPc).

Meanwhile, kin of the victim alleged that the victim had been rounded up by police a few days ago in connection with a robbery that had taken place in the boy’s neighbourhood. They added that the boy had committed suicide after he was released by police.

“We are trying to verify these reports as so far there is no information about where the robbery took place and in which police station was the case registered,” said the ACP. He added that the postmortem of the deceased would be conducted on Sunday. “Investigations are being held into the matter,” he said.
