A 15-year-old girl tried to commit suicide by burning herself after pouring kerosene over herself after her boyfriend reportedly refused to marry her.

The victim, 15, a resident of Chuhharwal village, has sustained critical injuries and has been admitted to the Kapurthala civil hospital with 90% burns on her body.

In the first information report (FIR), the girl stated that she was in a relationship with Gaurav (21) of the same village for a few months and he had promised to marry with her.

“Gaurav called me on Saturday evening to convey that he will not marry me after which I have tried to commit a suicide,” she claimed.

She blamed Gaurav’s sister-in-law for convincing him not to marry her. Dr Roshan Lal, senior medical officer, civil hospital, said the girl is in a critical condition.

“The doctors are trying their best to save her life,” he said.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against Gaurav and his sister-in-law under sections 306 and 511 of Indian Penal Code at the city police station.

Station house officer (SHO) Davinder Singh said both the accused are absconding and the police are conducting raids to nab them.
