The city is seeing an increasing number of sexual attacks against minor boys and girls. Two more cases were reported on Thursday night, taking the number to five in the past three weeks.

Police said a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting rape on the 7-year-old daughter of his neighbour at Jeevan Nagar area of Moti Nagar.

In her complaint, the girl’s mother told the police her daughter had been playing on the verandah of the labour quarters rented by Mohan Ji when she heard her screaming.

She said she asked her brother-in-law for help who found Mohan Ji’s room bolted from inside. She said upon breaking open the door she saw the accused trying to rape her daughter after having removed her clothes.

Station house officer of Moti Nagar police station, inspector Gagandeep Singh, said Mohan Ji was arrested while trying to flee the city.

Mohan Ji Kesri was booked on charges of attempt to rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) act.

The officer said Mohan Ji is married and two sons, aged 8 and 6. He said the accused’s wife was out for work when the incident took place, and his children were playing outside.

‘Lured with candies’

In another incident, a 22-year-old man allegedly sodomised a 4-year-old son of his neighbour at New Subhash Nagar area of Basti Jodhewal locality.

In her complaint, mother of the victim said the accused, Thannu Yadav, had lured her son with candies to his room, sodomised him and fled.

Yadav was also booked for sodomy under the IPC and relevant sections of POCSO act. Assistant sub-inspector Rajinder Singh said a manhunt has been launched to arrest Thannu Yadav.
