A 14-year-old boy of Leel Kalan village under Sri Hargobindpur police station allegedly shot dead his elder brother after a spat here on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Shamsher Singh. The incident took place when the victim was playing with his younger brother (name withheld as he is a minor) at his residence, while their mother Gurmeet Kaur was working nearby.

A heated exchange took place between the siblings while playing, following which Shamsher brought an air gun from a room and opened fire at his brother, hitting him in his foot.

In retaliation, the younger brother brought a double-barrelled gun and opened fire at Shamsher, but the bullet hit a tree. Later, he fired another bullet, which hit Shamsher in the chest and he died on the spot.

Their father, Joginder Singh, has been living in Cyprus for the past many years. On getting information, the police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Batala civil hospital for a postmortem.

Batala SSP Tulsi Ram said the police had registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused, who is absconding.
