A 17-year-old girl of Sukhiabad was allegedly sold off thrice by her mother, in collusion with other persons. The victim was released when the matter reached an activist who informed the police.
Vini (name changed), who is six month pregnant, is being treated in the local civil hospital. She alleged that a few months ago her mother Babita had forcibly married her off to a Delhi resident in lieu of money but due to physical abuse by her husband she returned to her parents. Vini said she had conceived by that time.
"My mother sold me off to someone again in Jalandhar but I ran away. Recently she sold me for R50,000 and sent me to a middle-aged man named Pappa in Bassi Hast Khan," said Vini.
"Kamaljit Bangar, my mother's tenant and two other women helped her in the sell off. Pappa raped me and tortured me. One day I managed to contact our neighbour in Sukhiabad and they informed the police," said Vini.
Women cell in charge inspector Jaskaran Kaur said on August 25, a police party went to Bassi Hast Khan in search of Vini but Pappa's house was locked. The next day, Kamaljit Bangar and some prominent persons from the locality produced the girl in the sadar police station, she added.
"Since the girl was not in good condition, we got her admitted in the hospital," said Kaur. Sadar station house officer Lakhvir Singh said the complainant's statement had been recorded and a case would be registered soon.
